Our shared social responsibility
In February 2023, violent earthquakes shook the Turkish-Syrian border region. Several strong tremors, including quakes of magnitude 7.8 and 7.5, caused immense destruction in numerous towns and villages. Buildings collapsed, burying countless people and rendering many areas uninhabitable. The humanitarian situation was exacerbated by winter temperatures and the already precarious situation in northern Syria. The death toll rose rapidly, and millions of people were in need of humanitarian assistance, including food, water, medical care, and safe shelter. The international community responded with offers of aid and expressions of solidarity, but the logistical challenges in the affected areas were enormous.

Two years after the devastating earthquakes in February 2023, the situation in Turkey and Syria remains marked by significant challenges. Millions of people remain displaced and live in temporary shelters such as container cities, often in harsh winter conditions and with limited access to basic services. Reconstruction is progressing slowly, particularly in the worst-affected areas such as Hatay, which continues to resemble a vast rubble field. The socioeconomic consequences of the earthquake have exacerbated poverty in the region, and many survivors struggle with unemployment and income insecurity. In Syria, the situation is further complex due to the ongoing civil war and the associated humanitarian crisis, with persistent shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. Despite international assistance, the road to sustainable recovery remains long and requires continued support and investment in reconstruction and resilience building for affected communities.
As Lykia, we feel deeply connected to the region and are deeply affected by the consequences of the devastating earthquake in 2023.
In light of this humanitarian crisis, we see it as our responsibility to contribute to supporting the affected communities. Through the sale of our hammam towels, which come from the Hatay region, we support local businesses and artisans who have lost their livelihoods due to the disaster. Our goal is to make a small but impactful contribution to reconstruction and strengthening local economic resilience, giving people hope and a better future.
